HKU students Peter Roeleveld and Noah van de Wetering have won the Royal Jaarbeurs Poster Competition 2021. Since 1917, the Jaarbeurs has had a tradition of posters created by Dutch designers. To celebrate the doors being allowed to reopen now that the lockdown is easing, the Jaarbeurs, in collaboration with HKU (Utrecht School of the Arts), challenged students to create a poster for the opening. Roeleveld and Van de Wetering's design emerged as the winner and will be prominently displayed in and around the Jaarbeurs in the near future.

The jury rated the poster as "a pleasing poster with typography that seeks contrast while exuding unity. The image has depth and layering, with a strong composition. The waves in the design give the feeling of vibrancy, a breath of fresh air. It challenges you to keep looking." The jury was also excited that the two winners with different areas of expertise collaborated on the poster. Peter Roeleveld is a second-year Graphic Design student at HKU, while Noah van de Wetering is a second-year Photography student.

Second prize in the poster competition was won by Noa Wassink, third by Daniël Santé. Jury chair Aletta Kok, director marketing and digital of the Jaarbeurs, was impressed by the quality of the entries: "Great to see how students all found their own translation to celebrate the moment the Jaarbeurs can open again. We are very much looking forward to greeting guests and visitors again and we are also going to use the winning poster a lot in and around the building, including on our digital information screens. On behalf of the jury, I would like to congratulate all the winners and thank all the entrants for their great contributions!"

Besides Kok, the jury of the Royal Jaarbeurs Poster Competition 2021 consisted of HKU lecturers Sue Doeksen and Lyanne Tonk, and graphic designer Willemijn Staal. The competition was supervised at HKU by Graphic Design lecturer Anke van Haarlem.
