Royal Jaarbeurs introduces Sustainability Pledge

Utrecht, 9 February 2024 - Royal Jaarbeurs is taking an ambitious step towards becoming Europe's most sustainable event organiser and facilitator by 2030. An ambition that can only be realised if forces are combined. This is why Jaarbeurs is introducing the Sustainability Pledge. By signing this Pledge, Jaarbeurs and its exhibitors promise to take their responsibility and make every effort to organise trade fairs as sustainably as possible. Today, the first exhibitors signed the Pledge during the biennial trade fair VSK 2024. Jaarbeurs is launching trade fairs in the construction and installation sector with the ambition of a circular BouwBeurs in 2027 and a circular VSK in 2028.

Important step towards carbon-neutral trade shows

Marloes van den Berg, Chief People & Sustainability Officer at Jaarbeurs: "With the ambition to become Europe's most sustainable organiser and event venue, it is essential to recognise that exhibitors and visitors play a major role in achieving this objective. We have made a commitment to accelerate and drive sustainability in all the markets we operate in. For example, we continuously put sustainability at the heart of the programme at all our own exhibition titles. We also organise awards for exhibitors with the most sustainable product or participation. From today, we are also calling on our exhibitors within the construction and installation sector to accelerate sustainability by signing the Sustainability Pledge."

First exhibitors sign Sustainability Pledge at trade fair VSK 2024

Today, the very first exhibitors signed the Sustainability Pledge at the VSK 2024 trade fair. During the largest trade fair for the installation industry, exhibitors Zehnder Group Nederland B.V., Schneider Electric and Remeha B.V. signed the Pledge. Erik van Dongen of Zehnder Group Nederland: "We stand for a healthier indoor climate in which sustainability is a very important aspect. A large part of CO2 emissions come from the building sector and of course we are part of that. We therefore also want to make a maximum contribution to reducing CO2 emissions in order to move towards a circular economy. That is why we are signing the Sustainability Pledge today." In the run-up to BouwBeurs 2025 and VSK 2026, Jaarbeurs is calling on all its exhibitors to sign the Sustainability Pledge.

Towards a circular Building Fair and VSK

By signing the Sustainability Pledge, exhibitors from the construction and installation sector pledge to contribute to reducing their CO2 emissions during their participation in the trade fairs BouwBeurs and VSK. Marloes van den Berg: "We are continuously working on initiatives to make our events more sustainable, both in operations, organisation and attendance. For example, we ensure that sustainability is given a central place in the exhibition programme. We also offer both our exhibitors and visitors a sustainable catering range and, since the end of 2023, we have been offering exhibition stands constructed from sustainable and circular materials. In this way, we encourage both our exhibitors and our visitors to participate in trade fairs in a sustainable way. Emphasising that sustainability is and remains a priority wherever you go will hopefully inspire our exhibitors and our visitors to take their own ambitions even further and accelerate the green transition to become future-proof. Then together, through the events, and at this scale, we can really make a difference in the sector. In addition, for many exhibitors, legislation requires them to start reporting their sustainability efforts, so it will also be necessary to make their participation in trade shows even more sustainable." Van den Berg continues: "Our ambition is to start with the trade shows in the construction and installation sector, but then also to continue in the other markets in which we operate."
